American Idol contestant CJ Harris passed away at the age of 31 on Sunday.

The artist appeared to be suffering from a heart attack and was taken by ambulance to a local hospital in his hometown of Jasper, Alabama. Shortly after arriving at the emergency room, the singer — whose full name was Curtis “CJ” Harris — was pronounced dead, according to a report Monday from TMZ.

The singer performed on the reality TV show in 2014, which made it to the top six. After that he befriended Darius Rucker who became his mentor.

Harris auditioned for The X-Factor and The Voice but was unsuccessful, so he turned his attention to American Idol where he was He made a huge impression in the thirteenth season.

He auditioned first in Tuscaloosa and then in Salt Lake City Utah in 2014.

Harris impressed the judges with his rendition of the Allman Brothers’ Spiritual.

Judge Keith Urban told CJ, “You sing ‘because you should sing, not’ because you want to sing. And I mean that in the deepest way. That’s why it’s so believable and real.”

Then he sang Too Close, American Woman, and Free Fallin’.

He reached the sixth position.

In 2014 he told The Hollywood Reporter that he auditioned for American Idol on him. I saw they do a bus tour and they were about 30 minutes down the road from me. I said, “You know what? I’m going to give it another chance. It’s gotten so much better, my voice has matured and the playing is so much better. I’m 23, before you know it I’m 33 and I want to give it another chance.”

He’s found success after idol too, performing on the Grand Ole Opry with Darius Rucker.

Harris shared that he came from humble beginnings.

At the age of eight, he began learning guitar on a broken instrument gifted to him by his grandfather. It only had three chords but it was enough to make him addicted to music. He also sang in the church choir and learned to play the piano.

Some of his influences were John Legend, John Mayer, and Keith Urban.

Prior to American Idol, he recorded an album, Small Town Boy, as an independent musician.
