Nintendo, ever the iconoclasts, chose the latest Nintendo Direct to announce no GameCube Zelda remakes we are sure are already finished and no info about the future Mario moviebut instead to surprise-reveal the official title of Breath of the Wild 2 . Was The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Only no, sorry about that, we’ll never be able to get out of the habit of calling it that Breath of the Wild 2.

Let’s be very clear here: Tears of the Kingdom (TotK) is a direct continuation of Breath of the Wild in a way no Zelda the game was a direct sequel from 1987 Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. Yeah sure, Majora’s mask followed from ocarina of timeand Ghost hourglass picked up after The Wind Wakerbut TotK it’s something else. This is a game that was openly created from the bits left over when they finished OTWthat apparent is based on same base map, which began development as DLC for the previous game. This is, beyond any doubt, as brilliant as it is, something more Breath of the Wild. That’s why it messes with our brains.

A few weeks passed to let the title sink in… it didn’t. I bet it’s not for you either. I bet your brain gives you”BotW2“before he starts struggling to remember if he is”tear” or just “Tears,” then gets lost wondering if it might be “Tears” as in rips… and then, yeah, we can all agree not to bother.

Come on, at least it should have been The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Tears of the Kingdom. Sure, maybe they should release it in a bigger box to fit the cover, but at least it would make some kind of sense. And it’s not as if Japan is averse to the long title. say hi Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors. Or, you know, The Second White Princess ~ Yappari Itto ni Ittemo Soujyanakutemo OK-na Gotsugou Shugi Gakuen Renai Adventure.

And look, we at my box you know we’re not alone in this.

damn far away several people have discovered my boxHis coverage of the sequel googling “BOTW” than anything mentioning tears or kingdoms. People will take so long to activate this!

It also certainly doesn’t help that when my eyes read “TOTK” the first thing I think of is “TikTok”, and god I don’t need that term unwittingly stamped on my brain anymore often than YouTube ads on me. the phone already does.

Of course, this distracts us from more important matters, like how we should organize international protests to make sure Nintendo doesn’t let the guns break after you hit them with a leaf this time. Can you imagine? Can you imagine if they didn’t listen to the unanimous agreement of the entire world population that this was a terrible mechanic and the worst aspect of OTW? Yes. Of course you can. It’s Nintendo. I suppose they’ll make them break more often, but this time each break permanently reduces your stamina caster.

It also seems like a good time to state my absolute belief that BotW2 will be released to overlap the end of the Switch era and the launch of Switch: Pro from the XL-dom (because they clearly won’t call that a “Switch 2” will they?). As we all know, something that has happened twice before is evidence of a pattern as eternal as Link fighting Ganon in every era, as Twilight Princess it overlapped the GameCube with the Wii and OTW It was standing with one foot in the Wii U and Switch, there’s no doubt in my mind that this will happen again. But also, when it doesn’t happen, no one will remember that I so confidently predicted it in an article about something else.

In the meantime, let’s not fool ourselves. It is BotW2 in our hearts and always will be. I fear for those poor people in Nintendo’s marketing department who are crying the tears of the kingdom over our insanity.
