The beauty of Wi-Fi speakers is that they are not tied to any particular device. Most of them also offer ways to connect directly to streaming music services so they can continue to play music even if you leave the room or house.
Sonos home Wi-Fi speakers can connect directly to over 100 different services.(Opens in a new window). This includes popular music services such as Spotify and Apple Music, as well as Audible for audiobooks and iHeartRadio for local radio stations.
You’ll need a subscription to some of these services, but there are free options, like Sonos Radio, which will stream music to get you started.
Why connect to audio services through Sonos?
Sonos speakers can be used with Apple AirPlay or Spotify Connect. Some of them, such as Move and Roam, support Bluetooth connectivity. But if you’re using the Sonos app, your speakers are connected via Wi-Fi, which means other people in the house can connect and add songs to the queue, switch the service, or change the volume from their devices. In some contexts, this also means that a better version of the song can be played.
How to add audio services
To add a new service to your Sonos system, open the Sonos app on your mobile device and tap Settings > Services & Voice > Add Service.
Scroll through the list of available options to find the audio service you want, then follow the instructions to sign in. Some services will log in from an app already installed on your phone, while others will require you to enter a username and password.
You can also add a new service to your Sonos system from the desktop app.(Opens in a new window) for Windows and macOS machines. Open the app and select Add a service in the Source column. If you don’t see the option to add a new service, you may need to update your speaker to the latest software.(Opens in a new window) before adding new services.
Add Multiple Family Plan Accounts
If you subscribe to an Apple Music or Spotify family plan, you can add multiple accounts to the Sonos app. To do this, repeat the steps above with a device that is signed in to the music streaming service.
Sonos authorizes the Apple Music Service directly from the Apple app. This means that if you want to add a second Apple Music account from the same device, you will need to sign out of Apple Music, sign in with your family member’s credentials, and then add the account back to the Sonos app.
Why should you add multiple accounts? Everything you listen to on your Sonos speaker through the music service of your choice is logged into this account. If someone else is listening to their favorite tunes on your account, your recommendations (as well as your Spotify Wrapped or Apple Music Replay) may be skewed by their choices.
