Miley Cyrus looks at her failed marriage to Liam Hemsworth in her new single “Flowers” — and to make matters worse, she dropped the song hours before her ex’s birthday.
“We were good / We were gold / A dream that couldn’t be sold,” Cyrus sings. “We were right/”Until we/ We built a house and watched it burn. “
The “Wrecking Ball” singer’s lyrics offer a double meaning, referring to the multi-million dollar Malibu home she shared with Hemsworth that was destroyed in a 2018 wildfire while also detailing how their relationship fell apart over time.
Cyrus, 30, goes on to sing that she “didn’t want to leave” the “Hunger Games” actress, 33, but then realized she was happier and better off on her own.
“I didn’t want to leave you / I didn’t want to lie / I started crying but then I remembered / I could buy myself flowers / Write my name in the sand / Talk to myself for hours / Say things you don’t understand,” she sings.
Cyrus was spotted dancing on the streets of Hollywood looking radiant in a gold ensemble and oversized black sunglasses as she held back the biting words.
“I can dance myself / And I can hold my hand / Yeah, I can love me better than you can,” continues the melody of Bruno Mars’ song “When I Was Your Man.”
Cyrus also sings that she has “no remorse” and “no regrets” and forgets “every word” as Hemsworth puts it as she lies by a pool while wearing sexy black lingerie.
She is then shown working out in her bra and underwear, showing that she has gotten stronger since they broke up.
The video ends with the Hannah Montana alum dancing around a gorgeous mansion wearing a man’s suit with no shirt underneath, hinting that the new home she’s built without a man is the perfect place for her.
The song hit YouTube and streaming services ahead of Hemsworth’s 33rd birthday on Friday.
Cyrus and Hemsworth were first linked in 2009 after meeting on the set of “The Last Song”. She later reveals that she lost her virginity when she was sixteen.
The couple secretly married in December 2018, but Cyrus announced that they were divorcing in August 2019 after less than a year of marriage. Days later, Hemsworth filed for divorce.
At the time, Cyrus had already moved on and was seen flirting with Brody Jenner’s ex Kaitlyn Carter.
Page Six exclusively reported at the time that Hemsworth learned of their separation via social media when Miley’s camp released a statement announcing the news.
But insiders on both sides shared that the relationship had been falling apart for months.
Cyrus spoke about their challenges in March 2022, calling the brief union “a disaster for King.”
The Grammy nominee has never had a problem finding love again. She dated Cody Simpson for 10 months until their separation in August 2020. In April 2022, she confirmed her romance with Lilly drummer Max Morando, whom she is still dating.
Meanwhile, Hemsworth began dating Gabriella Brooks shortly before his divorce from Cyrus was finalized in January 2020.
