National Press Club issues statement after LIV Golf announces television deal with The CW Network

It’s safe to say that the National Press Club is not happy with Nexstar’s decision to partner with LIV Golf.

Founded in 1908, the National Press Club is the world’s leading professional organization for journalists. The Club has 3,000 members representing nearly every major news organization and is a leading voice for press freedom in the US and around the world.

On Friday, its president, Jen Judson, issued a statement regarding LIV Golf’s multi-year television deal to broadcast its tournaments on The CW Network, owned by Nexstar Media Group.

The statement speaks for itself.

“We are deeply disappointed that a company that makes money from news like Nexstar agrees to take part in such an embarrassing PR stunt like LIV Golf, which is designed fundamentally to rehabilitate Saudi Arabia’s reputation, irreparably tarnished by the gruesome murder of the ordered journalist. For the state. Jamal Khashoggi in October 2018. We are left wondering what, if anything, Nexstar stands for. You can’t have a brand in the news and act like this. Saudi Arabia murdered a Washington Post journalist and hacked him to death with a bone saw.

“Riyadh wants to use golf to make Americans forget about the murder. We must not let them get away with it. We are calling on Nexstar employees, many of whom are journalists, to demand that management explain why they partnered with the murderers of a journalist. We urge Nexstar to do the right thing and cancel their damn golf extravaganza. And if they don’t leave the show, here’s what we can do: Don’t watch it; and write to each sponsor asking them not to sponsor.”

LIV’s second 14-event season is scheduled to begin next month in Mexico at Mayakoba.
