Newly leaked Motorola Razr 2022 images suggest Western markets are imminent

After the announcement of the new Motorola Razr 2022 last month, we wondered if the new foldable clamshell would be available outside of China. Now thanks to some new leaked renders courtesy of @evleakswe have some evidence that a global release outside of China may be imminent.

Promotional materials for the Motorola Razr, released alongside last month’s launch, only showed the contents of the displays in Chinese. These renders show a lot of English text – they may be intended to be displayed on Motorola’s global site.

Although some publications have suggested that a US release is possible, these images do not exactly indicate this. We don’t see any mention of a US carrier in any of the images, and one of the images shows a WhatsApp open screen, which is more popular in markets outside of the US. However, if you take a close look at the WhatsApp chat, the conversation mentions Portland and a “state” that probably refers to Oregon – in the US.

Interestingly, the time and date in all the screenshots is 11:35 on Tuesday, April 3rd. While this coincidence coincides with my birthday (yes, it’s true), April 3rd doesn’t fall on a Tuesday until 2029. However, upon further investigation, Tuesday, April 3, 1973, was the day a Motorola engineer made his first phone call using the DynaTAC, the prototype of the first portable cell phone.

Last month, Motorola announced the 2022 Razr, which boasts some decent upgrades over its predecessor. It has a new OLED panel with an improved hinge that fully closes and supports HDR10+ and a 144Hz refresh rate. Also, instead of a notch, there is now a punch-hole selfie camera.

There’s a 50MP primary camera sensor with OIS and a 13MP ultra-wide camera, but the real upgrade here is the addition of a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset (Motorola used Snapdragon 7XX series chips in previous models). The Razr 2022 is already available for sale in China starting at 5,999 Yuan (~$856). No other market pricing or availability has yet been confirmed by Motorola.
