Portugal will appear in their sixth consecutive World Cup, in Qatar later this year.

In the qualifiers, they finished second in Group A so they had to go through the play-offs. A brace from Bruno Fernandes saw them see off North Macedonia and book their place in Qatar.

Head coach Fernando Santos has been in charge since 2014. At Euro 2016 he guided Portugal to glory after defeating hosts France to lift the trophy for the first time. In the last edition of the World Cup and the European Championship, their tournament ended in the round of 16.

They will have Nations League matches against the Czech Republic and Spain next week and a warm-up on November 17 against Nigeria.

Manchester United striker and national captain Cristiano Ronaldo also collected the “Best Goalscorer” award on Tuesday 20 September.

Ronaldo, who has scored 117 goals for Portugal in 189 games, received the honorary award as the country’s all-time top scorer. He will be the captain of his team in the World Cup this winter.
