The Aretha Franklin Natural Woman controversy leaves the internet baffled

The song of the late American singer Aretha Franklin (You make me feel like) a natural woman was recently criticized by an activist group for having offensive lyrics, a move that left the internet baffled.

On January 21, a Norway-based LGBTQ activist group, The Trans Cultural Mindfulness Alliance, took to Twitter to criticize Franklin’s 1968 song, stating that it “has helped inspire acts of harm against transgender women.”

It is absolutely idiotic, crazy and outrageous that @TransMindful They’re trying to cancel Aretha Franklin. All the crazy moves start in Europe and eventually find their way here! Why can’t women celebrate themselves and the gift of simply being women? Amazing! https://t.co/U8J1oFJle2

Additionally, the group asked Apple Music and Spotify to remove it from their streaming services.

In the thread, the activist group has since claimed that its original post is “satire and not really serious.”

Aretha Franklin Natural Woman Controversy leaves Twitterati upset

Aretha Franklin’s 1968 song “Natural Woman” perpetuates multiple harmful stereotypes against transgender people. There is no such thing as a “natural” woman. This song has helped inspire acts of harm against transgender women. TCMA requests that it be removed from Spotify and Apple Music.

After the Trans Cultural Mindfulness Alliance considered Aretha Franklin’s successful 1968 crackdown on trans women, Twitter was taken aback. Several users criticized the activist group for trying to cancel the late singer over her song, saying the culture of canceling has gone too far.

Others just couldn’t believe or gauge whether it was okay to cancel a song that was released over 50 years ago. Take a look at some of these tweets below:

This has gone too far and you ain’t coming for one of Queen #aretha franklin greatest hits. Am I the only one who sees this as crazy? https://t.co/WwlQh3XYRl

The left is now coming for the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, because the song “Natural Woman” is apparently offensive to trans women. So here’s a video of her performing in front of Barack Obama and part of the liberal establishment and naturally they loved it. https://t.co/Khi4W7dj1r

Does TCMA know what ‘natural’ means? To say that Aretha Franklin’s song ‘Natural Woman’ is harmful to the trans community is crazy. You are perpetuating the very discriminatory behavior that you fight against. You can’t rewrite the meaning of words to fit your narrative. .

The Left is trying to cancel Aretha Franklin for her song “Natural Woman” for allegedly being transphobic. These are the same people who say “Black Lives Matter” but are trying to smear the legacy of a black icon who isn’t even alive to defend himself.

Like seriously LGBT community don’t come after Aretha Franklin be serious 😭 https://t.co/RX32MXKVn8

@ClownWorld_ Honestly, I’m glad Aretha didn’t have to live long enough to see this shit. Let that woman rest.

The trans community is trying to write off Aretha Franklin, but “you make me feel like a natural person with a womb” doesn’t have quite the same ring to it.

This trans group wants to cancel Aretha Franklin claiming that her song “Natural Woman” is harmful because not all women are ‘natural’ and is derogatory towards ‘trans women’ It seriously aroused that people want to cancel everything! #Trans https://t.co/s7aeLrlvRQ

After backlash, TCMA now claims it’s a “parody/satire” account

After the Trans Cultural Mindfulness Alliance’s tweet criticizing Franklin’s song began to gain steam, the Norway-based activist group updated its Twitter bio to “Parody/Satire.”

The organization’s social media bio states that its goal is to promote “cultural changes to ensure the inclusion of trans people.” However, in a follow-up tweet, the group criticized news organizations for ignoring the fact that it is a parody account.

“I am STUNNED that not a single media outlet that reported on Aretha Franklin’s tweet TRIED to contact this account for comment. Based on the sheer ridiculousness of the content on this page, how could JOURNALISTS not understand that this is it a parody/satire?

In the same thread, the account further wrote:

“Without investigation, the high-level corporate media went ahead and published that statement as if it were true and as if TCMA was a legitimate organization.”

In addition, he evaluated the quality of journalism these days, adding that “it is not surprising that Joe Biden is in the White House.”
